The New Mutants - April 10th

After countless delays, including a few that were the result of the pandemic, it seemed like this X-Men entry would never see the light of day. Towards the end of 2020, however, it did to mixed results. Blending the horror and superhero genres, Josh Boone's "The New Mutants" had a great setup. But its many delays did not serve it well. Ultimately, "The New Mutants" failed to live up to growing expectations. At least it did deliver a better final outing for Fox's X-Men than what we got with "Dark Phoenix."

Mortal Kombat - April 23rd

Get over here! As you ice off from the monster fight in "Godzilla vs. Kong," get ready to throw down some more nostalgic punches. First-time director Simon McQuoid brings to life the classic arcade game "Mortal Kombat," while also serving up a solid reboot of the previous live-action films from the '90s. "Mortal Kombat" follows Cole Young (Lewis Tan), an MMA fighter who soon discovers his true legacy as a new member of the Earthrealm champions. It's not long before Young is attacked by the big bad, Sub-Zero, and will need to team up with other Kombat members to take him out (and not for dinner). Like all of Warner Bros. films this year, "Mortal Kombat" will debut in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously.

No matter your mood, HBO Max has something for everyone this month. If you're looking for something funny, you can't go wrong with the golf classic "Caddyshack," now streaming. Also now streaming is Michael Jai White's hilarious send-up of '70s Blaxploitation, "Black Dynamite." Later in the month look for Seth McFarlane's surprise 2012 hit "Ted." You can also get nostalgic with the original "Space Jam," as you ask yourself "what is going on with the trailer for the upcoming sequel?"

Looking for something to watch that's more thrilling and dramatic? HBO Max will also deliver. Right now you can order up Martin Scorsese's '90s mob hit "GoodFellas," or Paul Thomas Anderson's '70s throwback "Boogie Nights." You can catch Clint Eastwood weeding out those darn hippies in "Dirty Harry." Or you can ride the Southwest with those hippies as they seek spiritual truth in Dennis Hopper's indie classic "Easy Rider."
