We just learned that a very distant relative of ours had their own national day yesterday...yes, that's right, National Monkey Day.

So, to celebrate our simian fam, we've curated 3 of the most epic modern monkey films that feature some pretty incredible apes.

  • War for the Planet of the Apes

If you're looking for the most intelligent apes to hit the big screen recently, then we have to mention the ones here because they're anything but ordinary, and speak really good English. They're also forced to battle against a rogue U.S. military faction after a former member of their tribe decides to start war on humans.

War for the Planet of the Apes

    Action / 2017 / PG-13

Synopsis: Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless colonel (Woody Harrelson). After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both of their species and the future of the planet.

Our next monkey is one that everyone's heard of, who's known for his ability to fight off airplanes while hanging off of the sides of tall buildings, like the Empire State Building. Filmmaker Peter Jackson brings the iconic ape back to life in this "King Kong" remake, which takes place first on an uncharted island where a group of filmmakers, actors, and actresses arrive on shore to learn that it's uncharted for a very good reason.

    King Kong

    Action / 2005 / PG-13

Synopsis: Peter Jackson's expansive remake of the 1933 classic follows director Carl Denham (Jack Black) and his crew on a journey from New York City to the ominous Skull Island to film a new movie. Accompanying him are playwright Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody) and actress Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts), who is whisked away by the monstrous ape, Kong, after they reach the island. The crew encounters dinosaurs and other creatures as they race to rescue Ann, while the actress forms a bond with her simian captor.

  • Kong: Skull Island

Our last recommendation is likely the most hardcore version of Kong to date. The film is also a reboot of the original 1933 film, but instead of arriving to the island by ship as in our last pick, this time the army decides to send in helicopters equipped with bombs to map out the territory. If there's even a slight chance, though, that a100-foot ape could be on an island, it's probably not the best thing to start dropping explosives upon entry.

    Kong: Skull Island

    Action / 2017 / PG-13

Synopsis: Scientists, soldiers and adventurers unite to explore a mythical, uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean. Cut off from everything they know, they venture into the domain of the mighty Kong, igniting the ultimate battle between man and nature. As their mission of discovery soon becomes one of survival, they must fight to escape from a primal world where humanity does not belong.
