The initial slate for the 44th Annual Toronto Film Festival was unveiled this morning and included amongst the indies and foreign films were some of the most anticipated movies of the year. Festival Gala premieres will include Todd Phillips' Scorsese-esqe supervillain crime drama "Joker" starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular villain, and Marielle Heller's Mr. Rogers biopic "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" starring Tom Hanks as the famous children's TV host (the trailer dropped just yesterday).

Matt Damon and Christian Bale's historical auto drama "Ford v Ferrari," from director James Mangold, will also have its premiere at the festival, along with DreamWorks' animated "Abominable," John Crowley's drama "The Goldfinch" -- based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and starring Nicole Kidman and Ansel Elgort -- and Lorene Scafaria's true-life crime comedy "Hustlers" starring Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu.

Other notables on the slate include many high-profile indies that will surely vie for awards attention this year. These include Renee Zellweger's turn as Judy Garland in "Judy," Edward Norton's sophomore directorial effort, "Motherless Brooklyn," and the non-franchise follow-ups from Taika Waititi and Rian Johnson, who step away from "Thor" and "Star Wars" for more grounded stories in "Jojo Rabbit" and "Knives Out." Not to mention, the latest from Steven Soderbergh ("The Laundromat" - starring Meryl Streep and Gary Oldman), Noah Baumbach ("Marriage Story" - starring Adam Driver), Pedro Almodóvar ("Pain and Glory"), Bong Joon-ho ("Parasite"), and the Safdie Brothers ("Uncut Gems" - starring Adam Sandler) will also play at TIFF.
