We've seen many examples of superhero teams that work well together and fight for the greater good. But can the same be true if the "team" only consists of ex-criminals? There's no possibility that at least one of them will turn on the group or only look out for their own personal interests? We're about to find out the answer to that question in just a few days. Warner Bros. will finally be releasing the highly anticipated film "The Suicide Squad," where some of the world's deadliest villains will have the chance to become heroes. Either that, or they'll die trying. Regardless, it's a win-win for the government, and for us. To make sure you're all prepped and ready to go hit the theaters, we've picked out the 9 things you need to know before you go watch "The Suicide Squad."
1James Gunn Will Be Directing This Insanity
"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn is at the helm of this mayhem. And we couldn't be more excited about it. This MCU director has proven time and time again that he knows how to make superhero movies and extremely violent/bloody movies. He's been a screenwriter/director on films like "Super," "Slither," and "Dawn of the Dead" to name just a few. So, to have him in the driver's seat for this new iteration of this famed DC squad, we can't think of anyone else better suited for the job. Even the early reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes are showing that this could be Gunn's highest-rated film yet.
2You Don't Need to Watch 'Suicide Squad' To Understand This
Following the mediocre release of the original 2016 film "Suicide Squad," fans might be wondering if they need to watch that film to be ready for this one. The short answer is no. Gunn made sure to announce to fans in a Tweet that, "No. You don’t have to have seen any other film to understand everything in #TheSuicideSquad." That said, there will be a few characters returning from the first film that you'll see in this one. So, if you want to get a little more backstory as to how the original squad was formed and what has happened so far, it wouldn't hurt to watch "Suicide Squad." But we can tell you that the only characters returning that we're aware of are Amanda Waller, Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, and Harley Quinn.
3Get Ready for a Whole Lot of Violence
You probably already guessed it, but there will be blood. The name of the film is "The Suicide Squad" because these felons are going out on suicide missions will little to no hope of survival. We have a feeling that Gunn will be leaning into his specialty on this one. There will certainly be a decent number of casualties, but that's not what we're saying here. Based on the nature of DC Comics and the animated violence that follows, you should expect every death in this film to be treated like Gunn has just lit a firework and it's about to explode. Also, we don't think Gunn will hold back at all given how much creative control he has over the film so keep that in mind.
4There Are New Members Joining the Squad
Now, let's talk about all the new lawbreakers that'll be joining this ticking time bomb of a team. There are so many fresh faces ready to be blown to bits. And they're ones you'll definitely recognize... at least for now. First off, let's introduce one of the new heavy hitters of the group, Idris Elba as Bloodsport. It looks as though he may be the new Deadshot (Will Smith) of the group. He's equipped with a deadly trigger finger and a daughter who needs her dad. Next up, we have John Cena as Peacemaker. This character seeks out peace by any means necessary. And there's no limit to how much bloodshed must happen to reach it. There are other new talented actors worth a mention, but these aren't really things you need to know just yet since you'll meet them in "The Suicide Squad."
5Prepare for Some Gut-Busting Comedy
With the savagery will also come the laughs. Gunn was able to inject some memorably hilarious moments into the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films. And he'll be doing the same here. We can already imagine the witty banter between these delinquents with a death wish. Even from the brief interactions seen in the trailers, we know it'll be great. When you take a group of psychopaths and force them to work together as a team, there's bound to be some funny moments. By the end of this, you'll probably be asking yourself who was trying to be funny and who was just plain insane.
6These Criminals Will Have Villains of Their Own
When intelligence officer Amanda Waller made this team, she did so because there was a greater threat to the world than these jailbirds. So, of course, we can expect to see some baddies that even this group of antiheroes can't fathom. And what's more fun than watching bad guys take on other bad guys. When it's good versus bad, the good people usually have morals and boundaries that they're not willing to cross. But with the bad people, all bets are off. There are no rules and most likely no survivors.
7Expect a High Body Count
Though there wasn't as much carnage in 2016's "Suicide Squad," we're guessing that James Gunn is going to bury close to half of the cast. We could be wrong. But Gunn wrote an interesting Tweet asking, "What two characters do you think are most likely to survive #TheSuicideSquad?" And Gunn is known for his bloody brilliance. So, we think he might overindulge some to make up for the previous film. All we know is we can't think of anyone in the cast that is truly safe. The only members that might be safe are Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and possibly John Cena's Peacemaker. We only chose this newcomer because he'll be getting his own spinoff series.
8Keep an Eye out for Taika Waititi
,One actor in the film whose role hasn't been revealed yet is the hysterical Taika Waititi. We've heard some rumors that Waititi may be playing the role of Ratcatcher, although that's just speculation. We know that Daniela Melchior will be playing Ratcatcher 2. But it doesn't say who's playing the original Ratcatcher. Nevertheless, whichever role Taika takes on we know he's going to kill it. Though he's known primarily as a director for films like "Thor: Ragnarok" and "Jojo Rabbit," he's been acting simultaneously and doing it well. Warner Bros. knew that one of the things fans would want to know is who Waititi would be playing in "The Suicide Squad." And they were right because it's driving us crazy, too.
9Watch out for a Post-Credit Scenes
We know you wouldn't expect to see a post-credits scene for "The Suicide Squad" since it's a DC film and usually those things only happen in the MCU. But, again, James Gunn is different. In a tweet to a fan who's asking about the existence of a post-credits scene, Gunn responds, "It DOES have a post credit scene. I love them. I think they give the audience a reason to sit through all the folks who worked so hard on the show. But they’re always an afterthought, a snack, not the main course."
