It's been almost two decades since the release of the last film in the Matrix franchise. This morning, we're lucky enough to catch a glimpse of what's in store for the future of the franchise with the release of the first trailer for "The Matrix Resurrections." Thomas A. Anderson aka Neo (Keanu Reeves) is living a seemingly ordinary life, and all of the people he'd known from his time in the Matrix don't appear to recognize him. With a prescription bottle filled to the brim with blue pills and a therapist (Neil Patrick Harris) trying to unpack the struggles that Thomas Anderson is dealing with, it seems as though his normal life isn't agreeing too well with him. There's only one person he would want to share an ordinary life with. But Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) doesn't remember who he is. So, let's dive a little deeper.

'The Matrix Resurrections': Trailer Breakdown

Though it's completely unclear how and when they're meeting, Neo runs into a younger version of his old friend Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). He's given the same two options that Morpheus originally offered him when they first met. To take the red pill or the blue pill? Given Neo's unanswered questions and abundance of blue pills, he heads back into Wonderland and goes down the rabbit hole with the red pill. After the decision is made, Neo meets someone in the coffee shop that looks like she recognizes him. This mysterious girl with a rabbit tattoo takes Neo through some kind of gate to another dimension or possibly another reality. Soon after, Neo is in a dojo with the young Morpheus dueling each other and it's quite clear the student has now become the teacher.

Neo has always been the chosen one, but he and Morpheus had similar levels of power. In this reality, it's abundantly clear that Neo is the standalone powerhouse. After their fight, we see Neo somehow reunited with Trinity. There's no way of knowing which simulation they're in or where they really are, but at least they're together. Then, the trailer kicks into high gear as we fast forward through a whirlwind of chaos. The simulated reality is being stretched and torn from all of the fighting and explosions. Trinity and Neo are showered by a storm of bullets. Luckily, Neo remembers his party trick of being able to stop bullets without ever touching them. But us telling you doesn't do it justice.
