We received a great surprise today. We "woke up this morning" to the first trailer for "The Many Saints of Newark." This film is meant to be a prequel to the hit HBO series "The Sopranos." For those of you who are familiar with the show, it follows the leader of a criminal organization named Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini). Tony is constantly at odds throughout the show balancing his family life and his mob life. But that wasn't always the case. Before he was the boss of the Soprano family, he was just a young kid trying to figure out whether he should go to college or stick around and join the family business. So, after getting a glimpse of Tony's origin story, let's break it down.
'The Many Saints of Newark': Trailer Breakdown
The kid that we see kick off this trailer with an old fashion beatdown is actually Michael Gandolfini, son of late "Sopranos" star James Gandolfini. After James Gandolfini's long run on the series, spanning 6 seasons, he passed away roughly 6 years after the show concluded. Now, his son is keeping the legacy alive by playing the same role as his father but a younger version. The film centers around an adolescent Tony Soprano many years before he becomes the leader of the family.
We can already see that Tony is a troublemaker (that's obvious). But what we didn't really see coming is that he has a high IQ. He's considering higher education, but he's also thinking about working for his uncle, Dickie Moltisanti. Because Dickie is family, he claims he wants to do anything he can to help his nephew. But what does that really mean in this family? Will young Tony have what it takes to live up to his uncle's expectations? Since this is a prequel film, we know Tony will have it, but we're curious to see the journey he took to get to where he is now.
