If you want to know the chronological order of the how the Conjuring movies are actually supposed to be watched (not in order of release), then you've come to the right place. In order to explain how we end up at the first Conjuring film, we need to explain the stories that set this world in motion. The journey through this demonic universe started when the sisters of a Romanian abbey opened a gateway in 1952 and unleashed an evil force in the form of a possessed nun.
The next chapter follows the young daughter (Annabelle) of a dollmaker who gets hit by a car in 1955. Her spirit then inhabits one of his dolls. Her one objective...get a new human host.
The evil spirit Annabelle was successful in securing a host, until that host died in 1967. Now she is determined yet again to get another one. Her new would-be victims seek out the help of Father Perez and other church members to contain the nasty spirit.
Fast forward a few years to 1971 and we meet Ed and Lorraine Warren, who are paranormal researchers that help get rid of ghosts by either vanquishing or trapping them. We see that this couple has successfully restrained the Annabelle apparition from escaping the doll...for now.
Annabelle Comes Home
Now it's 1972, and the only rule in the Warren household is to not touch anything in their artifacts room...too bad we already know that one of their daughter's friends ends up touching everything.
The Curse of La Llorona
Although some may not realize it, this movie takes place in 1973 and it is in the Conjuring universe. You might recognize a certain priest from "Annabelle" that comes into the mix by the name of Father Perez...this time not looking as possessed as he was the last time.
The Conjuring 2
It's 1977... Ed and Lorraine Warren continue on their quest to help those in need of supernatural assistance and stumble upon their greatest enemy yet...the hellish nun that started it all along with some other satanic poltergeists.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
Finally, we've reached the year 1981. Ed and Lorraine Warren have taken an interest in a murder trial taking place in Connecticut. Why? Because the Warrens believe the man who committed the murder may have actually done so while he was possessed. The Warrens point out that the court accepts the existence of God. But they think it may be about time it accepts the existence of the Devil.
