The new year is here with a full slate of exciting films ahead. The first to kick off 2022 is one that should hopefully have you on the edge of your seat. It involves international agents from various different countries working together to prevent what could be World War III. What's even more powerful about this new flick is that the ladies are leading all the way on this one. A group of four will be banding together without aide from their agencies to take on an entire army of terrorists. Will they be able to stop the war from happening? Or is this rogue team too small to prevail? To make sure you have all the information we do, here are the 9 things you should know about "The 355."

    Directed by Simon Kinberg

Primarily known for writing a handful of the X-Men films and directing "X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Simon Kinberg leads the charge for this new spy flick. With most of his experience being from the realm of superhero films, we're curious to see how that will translate into this new project. From the previews we've seen, the film appears to have more of a "Charlie's Angels" meets "Sicario" feel to it. It seems a bit more unhinged (in a good way) than the X-Men movies.

Jessica Chastain Is Playing an American CIA Officer

An unpredictable American CIA agent named Mason Browne is in charge of creating a covert team to take back a top-secret weapon. The agent is played by stunning actress Jessica Chastain. Similar in many ways to her role in "Zero Dark Thirty," Chastain rounds up all the best agents from around the world to form a team to stop a major terrorist threat. We've seen that time and time again Chastain is more than capable of leading the way. But this may be her most badass role yet.

Lupita Nyong'o Is Playing a Former British MI6 Agent

The second agent joining the troupe used to be an MI6 agent in Britain. She's the computer whiz of the group. She helps with surveillance, hacking, and any other technical needs. The role is played by "Us" star Lupita Nyong'o. Usually, we tend to think of the computer specialists as those who sit in a dark room away from harm. Lucky for her, she'll be smack dab in the middle of the action. Just because she knows her tech doesn't mean she hasn't shot a few guns during her active duty.

Diane Kruger Is Playing a German BND Agent

Our next recruit is one that might be the most dangerous agent of them all. Though this German BND agent is considered a rival to American Agent Browne, they'll have to play nice for the time being. She's well versed in stealing important items. And she definitely knows her way around every gun you can think of. Her name is Marie Schmidt and she's played by "National Treasure" actress Diane Kruger.

Penélope Cruz Is Playing a Colombian DNI Agent/Therapist

Here we have a double threat. Not only can this agent jump into physical action when needed, but her mental game is just as strong, if not stronger. Colombian DNI agent Graciela is also a psychologist and she's played by Penélope Cruz. So, when it comes to interrogating assassins and desperados, she's your gal.

Fan Bingbing Is Playing a Chinese MSS Agent

The final complement to the 355 is a Chinese MSS agent named Lin Mi Sheng who's definitely a force to be reckoned with. She's extremely talented when it comes to stick fighting and she's played by "X-Men: Days of Future Past" actress Fan Bingbing. There's a bit of mystery surrounding her as she's actively tracking every member of the team. Does that mean she has her own agenda? It certainly could. It's one of the things you should keep an eye out for in "The 355."

The Team Isn't Officially Sanctioned by the CIA

One of the things you also need to know about "The 355" is that this group of maverick agents still work for various different intelligence agencies. But for this mission, they're all on their own. No reinforcements. No additional resources. It'll be up to these women to infiltrate the terrorist organization and acquire the confidential weapon. The unofficial assignment is purposely off the books because if things go sideways, none of the agencies want to be accountable for what follows after.

    Expect Cool Stunts

From the trailers, we've already seen some particularly awesome stunts and sequences where the squad is going full tilt. In one shot, we see Chastain scaling the side of a very tall building at night. And in another scene, we see her jumping off a platform trying to land on a roof. We also catch Diane Kruger revving up a motorcycle ready for takeoff. And there's a glimpse of Fan Bingbing fighting off 3 or 4 men with a handy stick.

Be Ready for Shootouts and Explosions

Prepare to see lots of things exploding and more bullets flying. The vibe we're getting is along the lines of "John Wick," or the recent "The Protégé." These are things we know "The 355" will deliver on. In almost every frame of the previews, there's someone with a gun. With good word of mouth so far from the critics, the film's well positioned to be a great spy action thriller to jumpstart the new year.
