With Pride Month on our mind, we look to the 2019 musical drama film that in itself pays tribute to one of the most iconic and fearless artists to ever grace the stage. When thinking about artists that unapologetically came out whilst in the spotlight, Elton John was among the first to do it. He publicly announced he was bisexual in 1976 and came out as openly gay in 1988. So, to celebrate Elton John's courage and achievements, we're choosing "Rocketman" as our Pride Month must-see movie of the day.
Based on Elton John's actual life mixed with a bit of fantasy, this flick shows the early career, the highs and lows, and the eventual triumph of this famed artist. At first glance, it may be tough to define this film given there are some make-believe elements in the form of musical numbers that are sprinkled in. But at its core, it's a testament to how resilient Elton John has been throughout his career, no matter how many obstacles stood in his way.
It shows how John's fame and manipulative manager began to endanger his health. It shows the disapproval of the singer's sexual orientation from his mother. And it shows how he was somehow able to pull his way out of all the negativity. With so many critical people in John's life working against him, it's a miracle that he managed to rise above his challenges. His writing partner Bernie Taupin was the one constant thing in his life. John and Taupin even earned an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for this film.
The Pride Month Connections
The film is something for the LGBTQ+ community to connect to on multiple levels. For some, it's a story of hope and empowerment. It sends a message that no matter how hard it can get, you just need to stick in there and everything will get better. Even with everything that John was battling, by the end of the film he's still standing. And that's important.
For many, they may look at "Rocketman" as something that represents them during Pride Month. It teaches us that we need to cast out any negative influences in our lives. The people who are still there when things aren't going well are the people that need to be appreciated. Elton John was strong enough to go against the grain. Because of it, he's loved and adored.
Why You Should See It
To learn of Elton John's journey alone makes "Rocketman" a worthy watch. But there are some other reasons too. One is to watch actor Taron Egerton embody this musical icon. Egerton won his first Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in the film. He also sang all of Elton John's songs himself. That's by no means an easy thing to do. The film also provides great performances from the supporting cast members Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard. And although seeing John's story on screen is reason enough, the fantasy element of the film is interesting as well. The combination of real story with maginative musical performance is one that we haven't really seen captured quite this way before. Also, you can click here to check out the trailer.
Did You Know
It may come as a surprise, but this is actually Taron Egerton's third movie that features Elton John in some capacity. In the 2016 animated film "Sing," Egerton's character sings Elton John's "I'm Still Standing." Then, in Edgerton's 2017 film "Kingsman: The Golden Circle," Elton John makes a cameo as he punches and kicks his way through a chaotic fight scene. And finally, Egerton takes on the role of Sir Elton John in this film.
