He's a Guatemalan-born American actor that has found success in movies, TV, and he even has a few songs you can check out on Spotify. He was even named as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2016. The actor we highlight today for Hispanic Heritage Month is the extremely talented Oscar Isaac.
How You Know Him
Isaac has had some major roles in films like "Drive" and "Ex Machina," but the performer became a household name with his role Poe Dameron in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Since then, not only has he been a major part of the franchise, but he's been the leading man in most all of his recent work. A year after joining the Star Wars franchise, he was cast as the blue-faced supervillain known as Apocalypse in "X-Men: Apocalypse." And just last week, his newest project "The Card Counter" hit theaters and was well-received by critics.
His Life So Far
You might be surprised to learn, but Isaac didn't start off as an actor. His entry into the professional world began at the Area Stage Company in Miami Beach. But while studying in Miami, he was the lead guitarist and sang vocals in a ska-punk band called The Blinking Underdogs. They found mild success, opening for Green Day and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. However, after being accepted into the acting program at New York's Juilliard School in 2001, he set music aside.
In 2009, Isaac was awarded the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as José Ramos-Horta in "Balibo." After starting to get some attention, he nabbed the titular role in the dramatic comedy film "Inside Llewyn Davis," helmed by the legendary Coen brothers. For the role as Llewyn Davis, Isaac was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in 2014. Then, in 2015, he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his role in a 6-episode HBO miniseries called "Show Me a Hero."
After that, he joined the Star Wars franchise in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and has been killing it in major roles ever since.
The Movie to See
We've already mentioned that Isaac is known to most for Star Wars, but we'd like to highlight the film that's considered his breakthrough role. So, definitely watch Isaac in his first Golden Globe nominated role, "Inside Llewyn Davis." This Coen brothers movie has Oscar Isaac playing a struggling folk singer. Not only will you see how skilled an actor Isaac is, but you'll also admire his singing abilities. Of all his films, this one showcases the most of what Isaac can bring to the table.
At the time, many felt Isaac was snubbed by not receiving an Oscar nomination. But the film did receive a nomination for Best Cinematography and Best Sound Mixing. Isaac shares the screen with top actors Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund, F. Murray Abraham, Justin Timberlake, and Adam Driver.
What's Up Next
Oscar Isaac has a ton of things on the horizon to look forward to. For one, he's reprising his voice acting role as Gomez Addams in "The Addams Family 2," which premieres in October. But more importantly, there's lots of buzz around the reboot of "Dune," which hit theaters and HBO Max on October 22. And as if that wasn't enough, Isaac will join the MCU in his own Disney+ series bringing to life the character "Moon Knight," set to be released in 2022. He'll also star in Samuel Goldwyn Films' "Big Gold Brick," which set to premiere sometime in 2022.
