It may be a new year, but with the Oscars still a few months away, the 2020 awards season is very much in full swing. We have already heard from critics in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, and tonight the Gotham Awards will unveil their winners, but Noovie's own Perri Nemiroff looks at the four movies that totally deserve your attention.

Highlights include Shaka King's historical biopic "Judas and the Black Messiah," starring Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield; Kevin Macdonald's legal thriller "The Mauritanian," starring Jodie Foster; first-time director Emerald Fennell's revenge thriller "Promising Young Woman," starring Carey Mulligan; and Chloe Zhao's western drama "Nomadland," with Francis McDormand.
