It's summer, and that means it's time to change the scenery and hit the road with your special someone, your family, or some pals on a fun getaway. Sure you can head to the usual spots -- the beach, the big city, Vegas, or a weekend retreat at an all-inclusive resort. But wouldn't it be great if we could just visit someplace a little more fantastical? Cinema boasts a wide collection of locales that would make great, idyllic vacation spots. You can bask in the sun of a far-off world, take a never-ending interstellar cruise, or sightsee the most advanced city Africa has to offer. Here are the nine movie locations we would love to visit -- if only they were real.
9 / Scarif from 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story'
Ok, we know what you're thinking -- Scarif is a war-torn planet! But look at that golden coast! If we don't think twice about venturing to the beautiful beaches of Da Nang, we can certainly take a jaunt to the sun-soaked shores of Scarif in a galaxy far away. Sure, those beaches also once housed all of the Empire's data files and ultimately saw a lot of action, but I'm sure there's a tasteful memorial to visit for all you war buffs.
8 / Axiom from 'WALL-E'
Not game for the beach? How about a cruise where all your needs are taken care of by subservient robots? Axiom is the ship that once housed Earth's entire human population after some over-consuming species dried it all up. So finding an available cabin shouldn't be that hard. And, just think of all the endless fun--and soda--you can have aboard. Look, after the humans came back to Earth and reclaimed its natural beauty there's no reason to think they would have junked Axiom. To do so would be the ultimate irony. We'd like to think that Axiom was refurbished as the ultimate interstellar cruise ship. One that actually comes back home after a while.
7 / Pandora from 'Avatar'
We'll leave the hunt for the uninspired Unobtainium to Parker Selfridge and the RDA. All we want to do for this trip is jump into our own avatar and camp out in those treetops. Pandora is the ultimate destination where you can leave all your technology behind and connect with nature. Literally! Not only that but there's so much of this world left to explore, like the water worlds. All in due time...eventually.
6 / The Grand Budapest Hotel from 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'
The characters, the colors, the symmetry -- it's all there at the Grand Budapest Hotel. This glorious European ski resort is rich in story and schemes. It's also probably the most down to Earth of all these movie locations. When you check in, be sure to introduce yourself to the head concierge, Gustave. He's is a man that takes care of the needs of all his guests, no questions asked. Also, who wouldn't want to spend some time in a Wes Anderson world?
5 / Hogwarts from the 'Harry Potter' movies
Vacations shouldn't only be about rest and relaxation. It's also a good time to take in some history and culture. If your idea of a fun trip is visiting a storied institution like West Point, then Hogwarts is one movie location that should be high up on your list. You can discover how wizards are made and experience all the magic that muggles only dream of. Just don't get too freaked by the live pictures and paintings of the school's esteemed alumni. Then, after the tour, be sure to stick around for a quidditch match.
4 / Emerald City from 'The Wizard of Oz'
Nestled at the end of a long and winding yellow brick road is the crown jewel of the Land of Oz. The viridescent capital Emerald City is a vibrant and bustling city. You might need some ruby slippers, but once you make it past the gate, you can hop on a horse of a different color and take in all the wondrous green the city has to offer. We just won't mention that mysterious "wizard" that runs the show.
3 / Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory from 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory'
If sightseeing day tours are on your vacation list, then touring Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory is your golden ticket to a world of pure imagination. Willy Wonka's factory is not your run-of-the-mill facility. As you float down the chocolate river, you can treat yourself to the larger-than-life candy and even taste the wallpaper! Wonka is a dreamer of dreams, but be sure not to over-indulge or let your vices get the best of you.
2 / Rivendell from 'The Lord of the Rings' Trilogy
Middle Earth is full of amazing destinations, from the lush Shire to the depths of Helm's Deep. But perhaps the most striking place to visit would be the Misty Mountains, whose peaks will lead you right to the Elven realm of Rivendell. Home to the sage ruler Elrond, Rivendell boasts breathtaking waterfalls and striking, 'gram-worthy views. Of course, one does not simply walk up and ring the doorbell. But if they are taking reservations, we'll be first in line to book a room.
1 / Wakanda from the Marvel Cinematic Universe
The MCU is not short on scenic locations, from Asgard and Knowhere to Xandar and even Sakaar (yes, it's a junk planet, but it's a junk planet run by Jeff Goldblum!). Out of all those spots, the one we'd love to visit most wouldn't even involve interstellar travel. Located in the heart of Africa, the highly advanced city of Wakanda was once a secret, but the Vibranium Capital of the World is now giving back. Surely, after the Blip, tourism must have picked up. Wakanda forever!
