It's October. But don't let the still-warm weather and the huge tentpole movies at the theater fool you. Fall is here and so is the start of the 2021 awards season. Interestingly enough, all the new indie movies now playing have film festival connections. Most premiered at Cannes, while our highlight stirred the crowd at Venice. Take your picks, or choose them all from our selections of the best newly available indie movies that you can watch right now.

This fall, director Ridley Scott has two projects that have an eye on awards, "The Last Duel" and "House of Gucci." Interestingly, they both also star Adam Driver. "The Last Duel" is the first of the two, and it also marks the first time since "Good Will Hunting" that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon collaborated on a screenplay. The timely medieval drama is already picking up Oscar buzz for all its leads, especially Jodie Comer.

Fiction and reality blur for a filmmaking couple seeking inspiration in Mia Hansen-Løve's "Bergman Island." The couple heads off to Fårö island, the island retreat used by Ingmar Bergman. Strange things start to brew as they stay in the same house where Bergman shot the 1973 miniseries "Scenes from a Marriage." "Bergman Island" was one of the buzzy selections from this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The Velvet Underground was a band full of dichotomies. They were of their time, ahead of their time and timeless. They were high art and pop art, but also street art. As such, the Velvets stand as one of the most influential bands of the 1960s. With their dynamic frontman Lou Reed, they defined alt. rock before the genre was even a thing. Filmmaker Todd Haynes ("Carol," "Dark Waters") explores the band's history and legacy in this provocative rock doc that also includes never-before-seen interviews and live performances. "The Velvet Underground" is another buzzy Cannes selection that's now getting released.

"Lamb" is another new indie movie that made waves at Cannes earlier in the year. It's also A24's most bizarre entry to date. We don't want to give too much away but don't let the title fool you. The thing that's at the center of Valdimar Jóhannsson's supernatural feature debut is not so much a "lamb" as it is something else entirely. "Lamb" might not provide the traditional jump scares of the horror genre, but this slow burn will surely creep you out enough for Halloween.

Hot Indie Trailer: Red Rocket

The director of "The Florida Project" and the star of the last three "Scary Movies" make for an odd pairing of talent. But there's a chance that Sean Baker might do for Simon Rex what the Safdie brothers did for Adam Sandler. "Red Rocket" generated plenty of buzz at Cannes. The film might not get Rex to the Oscars, but he'll have a good shot at an Indie Spirit Award, or what Sandler called Hollywood's "Best Personality Awards."
