A new film titled "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" arrives this weekend. It tells the story of famed televangelists Tammy Faye Bakker and Jim Bakker. In 2000, a documentary detailed their rise to fame and the controversy that followed. Now, the cinematic version of their story opens in theaters. Andrew Garfield plays the role of Jim Bakker and Jessica Chastain takes on the title role of Tammy Faye. To prep for the release, we recommend three of our favorite Jessica Chastain movies where her performances are indelible. And then be sure to check out "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" in just a few days, only in theaters.
Zero Dark Thirty
Though her character in the film is miles away from the character she'll by playing in "Tammy Faye," many consider this Chastain's best performance to date. She plays Maya Harris, a CIA intelligence analyst who tracks down al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The sheer confidence and force Chastain brings to the table is what drives the whole film. She's constantly questioned by her peers. But it's her pure determination that drives the investigation forward. She won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for this performance, but we think she deserved an Oscar as well.
A Most Violent Year
This recommendation features Chastain as the wife of the of an up-and-coming oil company owner. When members of the company find themselves constantly accosted by the competition, Chastain's character becomes the voice of unorthodox reason. Abel Morales (Oscar Isaac) wants to find a solution where violence isn't the answer. But his wife Anna (Jessica Chastain) isn't too supportive of that strategy. Side note: Anna's father has a pretty extensive criminal background.
Our third pick is one of Chastain's more popular commercial films. Chastain plays Celia Rae Foote, a housewife who feels rejected by some peers of a higher class. She's trying to desperately to fit in with these socialites. So, she hires a housekeeper Minny (Octavia Spencer) who teaches her how to cook. Celia has always led with kindness and the best of intentions, only to be ridiculed by others who don't feel she belongs in their social circle.
Although Chastain's just one cast member in a strong, all-star ensemble here, she's an important team player alongside Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Octavia Spencer.
Jesse is a writer and content manager for Noovie. When he's not working, he's on the beach playing volleyball.
