Many view her as one of the new talents on the scene in Hollywood productions. But Hispanic Heritage Month star Eiza Gonzalez has starred in entertainment for more than a decade.
How You Know Her
She plays Shaw Deckard's (Jason Statham) former lover, and expert thief, Madame M, in "Hobbs & Shaw." She's a high-powered Latina executive in "Godzilla vs. Kong." She plays Rosamund Pike's girlfriend in last year's acclaimed "I Care a Lot." And she's woman of action in 2020's "Bloodshot"; 2019's "Alita: Battle Angel"; 2018's "Welcome to Marwen"; and 2017's "Baby Driver."
Besides those projects, she succeeded Salma Hayek as vampire queen Santanico Pandemonium in the televised version of Robert Rodriguez' "From Dusk till Dawn."
She's on the upswing in the industry, with plenty of intelligence, grit, charm, and beauty to spare.
Her Life So Far
Eiza Gonzalez was born in 1990 in Mexico City to ex-model Glenda Reyna and Carlos Gonzalez. At age 12, her father died in a motorcycle accident. She's said in interviews that depression and eating disorders affected her throughout her teen years, as a result of her dad's passing.
She studied acting as a youth. She was cast at age 16 in the popular telenovela "Lola, erase una vez" as the title character, Dolores "Lola" Valente. Subsequent Mexican productions followed, including Nickelodeon's popular series "Suena conmigo." At the same time, Gonzalez managed to record two albums: "Contracorriente" (2010) and "Te Acordaras de Mi" (2012).
By 2013, Gonzalez had relocated to Los Angeles, but she soon moved once more to Austin, Texas, to shoot "From Dusk till Dawn" from 2014 to 2016.
Since then, the actress has continued to spread her wings in small, pivotal roles in studio projects. Besides her live-action parts in "Hobbs & Shaw," "Bloodshot," and "Godzilla vs. Kong," Gonzalez provided her vocal talents to animations like "Spirit Untamed."
The Movie to See
While she's not the lead, Eiza Gonzalez makes a huge impression in "I Care a Lot." She plays the girlfriend and business partner of Rosamund Pike, who runs a wicked conservatorship scheme. Both actresses are cast as unlikeable people, but somehow, you still care about what happens to them. Gonzalez especially remains sympathetic. The movie's an engrossing watch, and an original thriller.
What's Up Next
Continuing her rise in big movies, Gonzalez co-stars alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in Michael Bay's "Ambulance." The story has the two men as robbers who commandeer an ambulance…with a patient and paramedic (Gonzalez) in tow. Watch for it in theaters on February 18, 2022.
