Cyrano: Trailer Breakdown

The first preview of a new take on a classic love story has just been dropped on our doorstep this morning. At its helm is director Joe Wright ("Pride & Prejudice" and "Atonement"). His new musical drama film "Cyrano" is based on the 2018 stage musical of the same name, which is based on the Edmond Rostand play from 1897 titled "Cyrano de Bergerac." It follows a young man named Cyrano de Bergerac who's in love but can't bear to confess his love due to his stature (instead of his nose this time). The woman he's in love with, Roxanne, has eyes for another, more desirable man. With Roxanne's happiness top of mind, Cyrano decides to find her desired partner and help him win her over. Will this plan of his actually work? Let's break down this new trailer for "Cyrano" and see what we can learn.

'Cyrano': Trailer Breakdown

Not just anyone can love someone so much that they'll try to play cupid for them with their own heart on the line. Cyrano proves just how selfless a person he is from the start. We can tell from the first interaction between Cyrano and Roxanne that they are dear friends. The only problem is that Cyrano's feelings cover more than friendship. As they confide in each other, Cyrano thinks that Roxanne may feel the same. As they get closer and closer, Roxanne admits to Cyrano that she is madly in love... with a new recruit named Christian.

Though Cyrano wishes that her love was for him, he ends up helping the new recruit so that Roxanne will be happy. Christian fully admits that he's witless and knows nothing of romance. Cyrano offers his expertise as a poet to provide the romance through the written word. As Cyrano confesses his love through letters on behalf of Christian, Roxanne's love for him grows twofold. When Christian and Roxanne are together, she requests that he speak to her as he does in her letters. So, he tries his luck at this romance poetry. He says, "You are a beautiful flower." She is immediately offended. She replies, "I am not a flower!" Though Cyrano believes that his fate is to love Roxanne from afar, Christian tells him that it's Roxanne's choice whom she loves.
