For many audiences, your introduction to a certain enormous red dog was from a book that you bought at a Scholastic Book Fair. That's right, Clifford! Paramount has decided to bring our beloved canine to life and make him the biggest dog we've seen yet on the big screen. This week, "Clifford the Big Red Dog" hit theaters and we're here to give you our review, so you can decide whether or not to go watch it.

Reasons to Watch...

  • The film explores the love shared between a girl and a dog who both feel like misfits in a society that ostracizes those who are different.
  • This larger-than-life CGI'd red dog isn't exactly what we remember from the book, but it brings on the smiles and entertains us just the same.
  • Kids will absolutely love the havoc that Clifford inadvertently wreaks wherever he goes. With a dog this big, anything that gets in his way will be broken.

Or Not...

  • Though we love this theatrical reimagining of Clifford, hardcore fans may not approve of his new look. Also, in the animated show, Clifford was able to communicate with other dogs which isn't the case here.
  • For such a magical character like Clifford who grows from the love he receives, the film tends to fall into foreseeable clichés.
  • This is definitely targeted to a younger demographic with sometimes overly simple jokes and writing. It feels like a somewhat missed opportunity given the nostalgia that older audiences feel for this character.

Watch or Not?

After reviewing "Clifford the Big Red Dog," we think you should go watch it with your family.

We can't put into words how much we've missed this pup. Even though this might not be the exact same dog we grew up with, it's close enough that we can enjoy it along with kids who haven't discovered him yet. We'd guess it's lots of kids' dream to have a colossal red doggy. And we know they'll love seeing Clifford roaming the city with his tongue out and tail wagging.

Watch it now in theaters
