The big screen is back! Paramount's long-delayed "A Quiet Place: Part II" spoke loudly at the box office with a four-day total take of $57M. This was the best theatrical debut since the start of the pandemic and stands as proof that this summer should show signs of normal life at theaters.
Throughout the weekend John Krasinski's follow-up to his 2018 runaway hit took in better daily grosses than "Godzilla vs. Kong" did on its opening weekend. The final extended weekend haul for "A Quiet Place: Part II" put the film just shy of the $60M average that was expected back in March 2020, when the film was initially planned for release. Moreover, that haul nearly topped the entire domestic box office run of the original theatrical savior "Tenet." With such an impressive debut, "A Quiet Place: Part II" should give studios and theaters hope for an even more impressive opening later this month with the release of Universal's "F9."
Disney's "Cruella" also opened to impressive numbers, though it was not nearly as big a bang as "A Quiet Place: Part II." The family-friendly villainess drama took in $26.5M placing it at No. 2. Disney expected "Cruella" to score lower than Paramount's horror sequel, but the film's weekend haul was likely undercut by its simultaneous release on Disney+ Premier Access.
Along with Paramount's re-issue of their 2013 zombie thriller "World War Z," the rest of the box office was dominated by holdovers. Lionsgate's horror spin-off "Spiral" led the holdovers with $2.8M placing it at No. 3.
Now that the box office is nearly back to normal, time will soon tell just how performant the day-and-date release experiments are. If the pandemic has taught us anything about moviegoing, it's that people want freedom of choice. "A Quiet Place: Part II" was exclusive to theaters (the 45-day window before PVOD could end up being the sweet spot for theater lovers, studios and streaming fans). This weekend's "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It," will premiere in theaters and on HBO Max. Now that audiences are feeling more comfortable being back in the theater, will they return for this horror sequel like they did for last weekend's, or will they mainly choose to stream it at home?
Could it be that seeing it on the big screen is a must for certain event films? While others (indies and mid-level films) work fine on streaming? And if that's the case, what about raiding studio ip vaults for other experiences that are best on the big screen? Use those to further program and market theaters with the shortened window for new films? Studios? Exhibition? Anyone? Expand the private screening party options? Anyone?
